Erdogan Expresses Solidarity with Spain After Deadly Train Collision
“I wholeheartedly share, on behalf of my country and nation, the grief of those who lost their loved ones, and I send Türkiye’s messages of unity and solidarity to the people and government of Spain,” Erdogan wrote on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal.
He also expressed his wishes for a swift recovery for those injured in the crash.
The collision involved two high-speed trains in central Spain, killing at least 64 people and injuring around 80, according to Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente.
Emiliano Garcia-Page, president of the Castile-La Mancha region, cautioned that the number of fatalities could increase as the situation developed.
Puente said an information technology failure at approximately 8:30 a.m. local time (0730GMT) disrupted railway operations across a stretch of about 60 kilometers (37 miles). The malfunction affected the automatic safety system and resulted in six trains being halted within the impacted section.
Rail operations were subsequently overseen by infrastructure operator Adif’s control center. Puente said the center authorized a train following a stationary Iryo service to continue its journey "as normal" at approximately 8:36 a.m. local time (0736GMT).
